Course Details

Chichester College benefits from having its own, professional Barber shop. It is accredited by the British Barbering Association, is open to the public and staffed by students. This Barbering study programme is suitable for practically minded people who are innovative, have a creative flair, a lively personality and a genuine interest in people. It is challenging and varied, covering a variety of skills to enable you to enter the Barbering Industry.

Entry Requirements

English Language GCSE grade 4 or above. Science, Math, PE or a creative subject such as Textiles or Art grade 3 or above and one other GCSE grade 3 or above in any other subject. You need to secure a work experience placement in a barber shop to enrol on this course.

Career options

Successful completion of the course and passing an industry based assessment will allow you to progress on to the Level 3 Diploma in Barbering or into industry where you can work for an employer or rent a chair in a barbershop.

What you need to know

What will I study?

You will follow a study programme consisting of Barbering, Work Experience and Enrichment activities. The barbering qualification will consist of : Client consultation for hair services; Colour and lighten hair; Cut men's hair; Style men’s hair; Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp; Cut facial hair; Health & Safety; Promote products and services to clients; Reception duties; Working in the hair industry; Create an image based on a theme and Display a stock to promote sales. You will also follow English and Math which are an essential part of your course.

How will I be taught?

The delivery of this course will be in the training work shops and the Barber shop. This course will be a combination of demonstrations, practical sessions, structured theory delivery, group work, self-directed study, classroom discussions and research. External guest speakers are invited throughout the year.

How will I be assessed?

Practical skills will be assessed through observation by your Assessor and External Verifier from the awarding body. Theory knowledge will be assessed through a combination of written assignments and exteranl exams which are set and marked by the awarding body.
