The HNC is the first year of a course of 2 years duration and is studied at level 4. The second year is the HND at level 5. The course consists of 8 modules in the first year and 7 modules in the second year. First year modules, 6 of which are 'core' and have to be completed as part of the HNC: Programming, Networking, Security, Database Design & Development, Professional Practice, Managing a successful computing project. The additional 2 modules, which are 'non-core': Website Design, 3D Modelling. The course is split into two semesters of approx. 12 weeks duration. Each semester will have a mix of modules and assessed accordingly. Each module will be delivered in a 3 hours block each week and most modules will combine theory and practical work. This gives the student plenty of opportunity to apply their learning in a dedicated 'lab' network, which comprises Windows, Apple MAC and Linux Systems with supporting software for the different modules. The course is up to date with developments in computing and provides the basis for the student to progress onto Level 6 BSc (Hons) in Computing to achieve the full degree at the College.
The course has been designed to provide the student with the knowledge and experience to develop a career in many areas of Computing such as: Network Manager, Systems Developer, App developer, Database Developer and Administrator, Security Analyst, Website Designer, Project Manager.
