Course Details

This course will help you develop a range of skills related to modern computing and technology and prepare you for work in the computing industry or for a top-up to a full computing degree. The emphasis is on implementing computing solutions for the modern computing environment. The course gives you the opportunity to take advantage of excellent networking and software engineering facilities situated in a purpose built environment. You will benefit from a large amount of tutor led class time from our professional, friendly, and approachable staff. As a practically based course delivered through supported workshops, it’s a ‘doing’ experience in preference to a ‘listening’ one. Each module is assessed by individual or group coursework assignments. The course includes a full range of computing skills and technologies including programming, database design, website design, network development & management, security, digital forensics, cloud computing, professional practice and a preset Project theme, which changes each year.

Entry Requirements

Preferred entry requirements will be: Level 3 Computing course with a minimum Merit overall, 5 GCSE's to include Maths and English and all with a minimum 4/C grade and above, English as a second language at IELTS 6.0. Professional experience and/or qualifications such as CISCO, Microsoft, etc.

What you need to know

What will I study?

The course consists of 8 modules in the first year and 7 modules in the second year. Second year modules, 2 of which are 'core' and have to be completed as part of the HND: Business Intelligence, Computing Research Project Additional 5 modules, which are 'non-core': Network Management, Forensics, Database Management Systems, Cloud Computing, Advanced Programming. The first year is the HNC at level 4 and the HND is the second year of a course of 2 years duration and is studied at level 5.

How will I be taught?

The course is split into two semesters of approx. 12 weeks duration. Each semester will have a mix of modules and assessed accordingly. Each module will be delivered in a 3 hours block each week and most modules will combine theory and practical work. This gives you plenty of opportunity to apply your learning in a dedicated 'lab' network, which comprises Windows, Apple MAC and Linux Systems with supporting software for the different modules. How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be a combination of written reports, presentations, creation of artefacts such as databases, network systems, program designs, security systems, user interface system, group work. There are no exams on this course. All coursework is assessed internally by the Lecturers. Course tuition fee - £6,500 per year
