Course Details

Learn about the painting, decoration and protection of properties as a painter and decorator by taking the level 2 standard apprenticeship. This apprenticeship will require you to attend college one day a week to learn about and develop the skills for your future in this trade. You will learn about work methods and requirements of a painter and decorator, how to engage with clients, product and specification information and the preparation, application and removal of paint and decorative materials.

Entry Requirements

You need to have an interest in painting and decorating. A prior qualification in painting and decoration is not necessary, though can be helpful. If you have not achieved atleast grade 4 in your GCSE maths and English you will retake these subjects. We will hold a professional discussion at interview to determine your suitability for the apprenticeship.

Career options

Completion of the level 2 apprenticeship is likely to see you continue working with your employer and applying your skills and abilities. You may wish to build on already gained level 2 experiences and progress learning to an advanced level by taking a level 3 and level 4 qualification.

What will I study?

Learn about operating in domestic and commercial properties and the decoration and protection of properties as a painter and decorator by taking the level 2 standard apprenticeship. You will learn about a range of equipment, tools and materials and how to use them safely and efficiently. This includes: safe working methods, health and safety requirements, working at heights, and you will apply this knowledge to your projects based work. You will learn about how to work with clients, projects in different sectors, such as commercial and residential, and the different building methods used so that you can best determine the appropriate paint products and specifications. As a practical-focused subject we train you on projects reflective of real-world situations. You will work with different surfaces, e.g. plaster and timber, prepare and strip them using different methods, and apply different techniques and finishes by brush, roller and spray. You will cover specialist decorative techniques, e.g. marbling and rag rolling, and wallpaper techniques.

How will I be taught?

Your time at College will be predominantly practically-focused with 60% of your learning involving practical tasks and 40% being theory. You will complete projects that simulate real-world jobs. Your will be guided with the support of the lecturer and, as your experience develops, you will be able to apply yourself more independently. How will I be assessed?

The end-point assessment will assess your application of skills, knowledge and behaviours acquired in the apprenticeship. This will bring together all that you have learned throughout your time at College and consists of 3 distinct elements: (1) practical skills assessment; (2) multiple choice knowledge test; (3) professional discussion about your knowledge and skills. Your apprenticeship also requires you to complete a minimum of 20% off the job training.
