Course Details

This study programme is a stepping stone for speakers of other languages that have either recently arrived or been living in the country for a while. We offer exciting lessons that will help you improve your speaking, listening, reading, writing and mathematical skills, whilst learning more about British culture and British way of life. By completing the course, you will be able to achieve a qualification in ESOL English and Functional Skills Maths that will help your future opportunities. The programme will also prepare you to progress to other college courses or the next level of Maths and English, whilst working on your independent study, employability skills, communication skills and future career opportunities. If you want to improve your future education and/or career options, ESOL is the best course for you.

Entry Requirements

Although there are no formalrequirements, we carry out an initial assessment that helps us place you at the most suitable level. There is also an interview, where you must show that you are committed to fulltime studies and keen to develop all of your skills, not just your English and Maths.

Career options

Once a level for Maths Functional skills and all the elements of an ESOL level have been achieved, you can progress onto the next.

What you need to know

What will I study?

The study programme includes: - ESOL English: we work on reading, writing, speaking and listening, alongside grammar and vocabulary lessons. - Functional Skills Maths: we work on the mathematical language used in exams and we develop the skills needed to achieve a qualification. - Life in the UK: we explore the elements that make British culture, we learn about British traditions, British values and discuss citizenship issues. - Vocational Course Experience: we offer you the opportunity to visit other courses that you may have an interest in to develop your language skills and see if it is suitable for you. - As well as all the above, there will also be Independent Study sessions, out of class support and tutorials.

How will I be taught?

Your lessons consist of 9 hours a week of English, 1.5 hours a week of Maths Functional Skills, 1.5 hours a week of Life in the UK, 1 day a week minimum a week of Vocational Course Experience, 3 hours a week of independent study sessions, optional out-of-class support for those people that need some extra help, and tutorials with course tutor and student tutor separately.

How will I be assessed?

ESOL English Exams and Maths Functional Skills Exams will take place when we think you are ready to take them. In order to make this judgement, we need to take into account the work completed during lessons and homework, and we will carry out assessments that will help us determine if you are ready or not.
