Course Details

This course is designed to develop the advanced skills, knowledge and performance of teaching support staff in schools. Taught subjects include: • Relationships, Supporting & Assessing Learning, • Literacy & Numeracy, • Inclusion & Special Needs, • Health & Safety, Professional Practice. Apprentices will be assessed by a College Assessor, who will mentor and guide you providing meaningful feedback on practices and enabling you to develop within your role.

Entry Requirements

You need to have experience of working in a school and be employed in a teaching assistant role. You will ideally be supporting literacy & numeracy, as well as other elements of the curriculum, in groups or on a one-to-one basis. You will be responsible for supporting and assessing pupils in class.

Career options

Apprentices can progress to supervisory roles, such as Team Leader, Higher Level Teaching Assistant roles, through completion of the HLTA programme.

What will I study?

The course is delivered using a blended approach, combining taught sessions and assessment in the workplace, and comprises: • Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools • Functional Skills Level 2 in English, Mathematics & ICT • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) • Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

How will I be taught?

Apprentices will attend taught sessions for the Diploma once a month. Additional sessions for Functional Skills will be held for Apprentices to attend if required

How will I be assessed?

• Apprentices will be allocated a dedicated Assessor who will carry out all assessment in the workplace. • Functional Skills are assessed through on-line tests and observations (for English). • Portfolio of work based evidence and assignments to assess knowledge
