A level Mathematics allows you to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying principles and concepts in mathematics and also to develop problem-solving skills and an understanding of how the real world around us can be modeled with mathematics. Mathematics is an extremely important subject in the modern workplace and the course opens up a wide range of career options as well as helping you to move onto a large range of university courses. As such, A level Mathematics is an essential course if you wish to study mathematics, physics, engineering, chemistry or economics at university. The problem-solving and statistical content makes the course very suitable for you moving onto courses in applied science, psychology, business, computer game design, architecture and sport science.

Entry Requirements

5 A*-C/9-4 grades including a minimum of level 6/B in GCSE Maths and 4/C in English Language, plus a willingness to work hard and persevere when it gets tough. You will also be required to complete a GCSE to A Level Transition Project, prior to enrolment, to prepare you for A Level Mathematics.

What you need to know

What will I study?

You will study topics including pure mathematics core, statistics and mechanics in both year 1 and year 2. Enabling the application of pure mathematics to modeling and problem-solving, pure mathematics topics of study include mathematical proof, geometry, graphs, trigonometry and calculus. Statistics topics include the collection, presentation and analysis of data and also the use of probability to predict real world behavior, while Mechanics topics involve modeling the real world in terms of forces, motion and energy. The A level is linear in content and so year 2 will build on and further the ideas and methods studied in the first year. A level Mathematics will require you to purchase a modern scientific calculator or a graphics calculator that contains the necessary functions for using probability distributionsm and this can be facilitated through the mathematics department. A textbook is also required for each year and this can be purchased as a book or as an online subscription.

How will I be taught?

A variety of approaches are used. You will be taught by participatory lecturing - new ideas need clear explanation from an expert, but lecturers will always incorporate a lot of student involvement. Investigation - sometimes you will explore a problem to deepen your conceptual understanding. Problem solving group exercises - discussing Maths helps to gain a secure grasp of the subject. How will I be assessed?

Assessment is via 3 exams at the end of Year 2. There will be various mocks to prepare you for the final exams and regular mini-assessments after each topic. All year 1 students will progress through a Year 1 Gateway, which may include external exams, that will allow you to progress to Year 2.
