Further Maths extends your Pure Maths and Applications skills and stretches your knowledge of Logic and Problem Solving. It is suitable if you wish to study more challenging mathematical ideas in preparation for Higher Education or if you wish to progress onto degree courses in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Economics, Actuarial studies, Operations research or Computing. It can provide great preparation for jobs where high powered Maths is used, or simply for the pleasure of the subject. Please note to study Further Maths you must be studying A Level Mathematics alongside.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE A*-C Grades including a minimum of 6/B in Maths and 4/C in English Language. This course will be taken alongside A Level Mathematics. You will also be required to complete a GCSE to A Level Transition Project prior to enrolment.

What you need to know

What will I study?

You will tackle topics that do not arise within A level Mathematics, such as complex numbers, matrices and hyperbolic functions. You will also extend you knowledge and skill-set in topics from the Mathematics course such as calculus, statistics and discrete mathematics. To succeed on this course, it is vital you are very strong at algebra.

How will I be taught?

There will be two sessions a week, a 2 hour and a 3 hour class with a half an hour break. A variety of approaches are used to ensure variation and student engagement. You will be taught by participatory lecturing, group activites and practice questions. Teaching is as in the Mathematics A Level, but with more opportunities to tackle problem solving questions. A Level Further Mathematics uses a Flipped Learning System where students learn some basic facts prior to the lesson which are develop

How will I be assessed?

This is a 2 year linear A Level where you are examined via written exams on the whole syllabus at the end of Year 2. All year 1 students will progress through a Year 1 Gateway, which may include external exams, that will allow you to progress to Year 2.
