Course Details

Looking for a career in blacksmithing or just have a passion for it? This course is designed for students who wish to undertake a farriery apprenticeship but do not have the necessary qualifications to progress onto an apprenticeship course. This is not only a useful skill development qualification, but it is also a suitable progression for students wishing to continue blacksmithing at a higher level. You will work to gain your NPTC forge work and NVQ level 2 qualifications together with English and maths.

Entry Requirements

You will have completed the Access to Forging or Artistic Blacksmithing Course, have achieved Functional Skills in Maths and English at Level 1 or gained a GCSE Grade D and above in Maths and English). Successful completion of an Aptitude Test and Interview with the Course Tutor are also required.

Career options

Having successfully completed and passed this course, you may be eligible to progress onto a farriery apprenticeship with one of the three national colleges (subject to their entry requirements). You will also have to find your own approved training farriery.

What you need to know

What will I study?

If you are a full time student aged 16-18 you will follow a study programme which will consist of your main course, enterprise and enrichment activities, English and Maths as well as work experience. The course is made up of 6 Units including Welding, Heat Treatment and Hand Forging, Functional Skills in Maths, NPTC Forging Certificate.The Forging Certificate is a Mandatory requirement for entry onto an Apprenticeship. Examinations will be held at Brinsbury Campus on dates agreed with NPTC in advance, starting in April / May by external NPTC examiner. The development of your personalised enterprise passport and enrichment activities fully enhance this course.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught via both practial and theory lessons. In addition to the main qualification you will study towards L2 Maths and English functional skills.

How will I be assessed?

This course is assessed through a variety of methods according to the qualification. NPTC – Gola on-line Exam, Practical Test Pieces, Practical External Exam, PEO - Observations, written evidence and practical test pieces. English and Maths Functional Skills – on-line exams.
