Course Details

This course gives apprentices working in engineering a basic all-round grounding in engineering operations and techniques. The competence element is designed to be tailored to operations in any given specific engineering sub-sector. On completion they will be of semi-skilled status; typical job roles would include metal working operatives, plant and machine operatives, quality control, routine inspection and testing, production of parts using computer controlled equipment and basic maintenance

Entry Requirements

Apprentices must be employed in the industry to cover the requirements of the framework. An initial discussion will be undertaken with the Course Leader to ensure the appropriateness of the course for each individual. This will involve discussion about previous qualifications and experience.

What will I study?

The course is delivered on a day-release basis and comprises: • Level 2 EMTA NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations (QCF) (Manufacturing Industries) • City and Guilds 2850-20 Level 2 Certificate in Engineering (QCF) (Manufacturing Industries) • Functional Skills Mathematics Level 1 • Functional Skills English Level 1 • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) • Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

How will I be taught?

Apprentices will attend college for one day per week, term-time only, where they will gain underpinning theory knowledge of engineering and train for working in an engineering environment. This includes an introduction to the type of practical work they may be required to undertake. In addition, apprentices will study towards their Maths and English Functional Skills, depending on their previous qualifications responsibilities and take responsibility for their own learning.

How will I be assessed?

The Technical Certificate is assessed through a series of online tests and question-papers relating to the mandatory and optional units. Functional Skills are assessed through online tests.
