Course Details

This is a challenging Level 4 course. It is aimed at candidates 17 years of age and over who have: 1) achieved the Level 3 DDI qualification and wish to complete their training in order to become a fully qualified and accredited ISTD dance teacher 2) wish to commence their training to become a fully qualified and accredited ISTD dance teacher. The DDE has been accredited by Ofqual at Level 4 on the QCF which is roughly equivalent to the level attained at first year degree level. Chichester College offer the DDE in Imperial Ballet, Modern Theatre and Tap Dance.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be at least 17 years of age and hold their Intermediate qualification in the genre they wish to study. They must also have 5 GCSEs at C grade or above including English and mathematics.

Career options

DDE will enable learners to work in a variety of independent dance schools across the country and abroad or to establish their own dance school. It is also a valuable qualification for progression to the ISTD Licentiate exam and/or the ISTD Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy.

What will I study?

Unit 1: Preparing for Safe Teaching Practice You will cover much of the essential information that a dance teacher requires in order to maintain professional conduct and keep themselves and others safe. Unit 2: Assisting, Observing and Teaching Practice You will develop knowledge and application of a range of teaching and learning techniques and evaluation skills; designed to give you the confidence to begin your teaching career. Unit 3: Intermediate You will enhance your practical demonstration and understanding of all aspects of the Intermediate syllabus in a chosen dance genre. Unit 4: Dance Practice You will study a specific dance genre from Primary to Intermediate and be able to demonstrate teaching methods and safe dance practice in relation to it. Unit 5: Social, Emotional and Cognitive Development You will gain an understanding of how to deliver effective dance classes appropriate for learners at different stages of development.

How will I be taught?

The DDE will be delivered through a series of seminars, practical sessions, technique classes, theory lessons, guest lecturers and individual tutorials. Private study forms an integral part of this course and you will be given clear guidance regarding the activities you should be undertaking outside of college to compliment your studies and ensure successful completion of the course.

Assessment techniques are designed to assess each unit of the qualification in an appropriate manner.
