Course Details

Technical Theatre Apprenticeships are designed to develop skills working backstage in a theatre. Level 3 apprentices on the Lighting Pathway will train as Board / Console Operators and Lighting Technicians. Apprentices on the Sound Pathway will train as Sound Technicians. Those taking the Stage Pathway will train as Stage Technicians. All your training takes place in a working theatre where you will learn on the job. You then take 1 day a week at college to complete your coursework.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE's (including English AND Maths) at Grade C or above or an equivalent Level 2 apprenticeship.

Career options

This qualification will help you gain the experience and training you need to begin a career in technical theatre. You can also go on to do further training in the industry and have a wide range of transferable skills.

What you need to know

What will I study?

The BIIAB programme sets out a selection of practical and theory based units of work for you to complete whilst you are training. You are required to fulfill all the criteria in each unit as well as maintain a level 2 or GCSE grade in English, Maths and ICT. You will complete these units as well as a booklet outlining your employee rights and responsibilities. You will also study other aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industry.

How will I be taught?

You will learn most of your skills in your workplace. When at college you will be guided to complete your portfolio of work and to hone and focus your areas for improvement.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in many ways on this course; in the workplace by your asssessor, at college with your tutor and you will be asked to provide witness statements and observation reports. You will be required to complete your coursework with a combinations of written work, photographs and video.
