Course Details

This innovative new two-year Foundation Degree programme is offered in partnership with the University of Chichester. It is built on Chichester College’s reputation for delivering high quality ISTD dance teacher training and the dance department at the University of Chichester’s long-standing reputation for its breadth of study. It is designed to prepare students for employment as a dancer, choreographer or community dance practitioner and/or a dance teacher within the independent sector. Drawing on the expertise of a highly qualified teaching team, students will have the opportunity to broaden their dance knowledge, develop their practical skills in technique, performance and choreography and be awarded the newly designed ISTD Diploma in Dance Education. Delivery will take place at both the Chichester College campus and the University of Chichester’s Bishop Otter campus, where students will work alongside the BA Dance and Dance Performance students. The programme is divided into strands of study that include; Dance Technique, Dance Practice and Production, Dance Contexts and Research, ISTD Genre Specific Dance Practice and Teaching Practice.

Entry Requirements

ISTD Intermediate in the relevant genre (or recognised equivalency) is required. Applicants need to have a combination of GCE A levels, or BTEC Level 3 Diploma/ Extended Diplomas (or equivalent ) totaling 104-120 UCAS tariff points. GCSE Maths and English Language are preferred at grade C/4.

Career options

Successful completion of this course will enable students to apply for full membership of the ISTD and embark on a career as a fully qualified dance teacher in the independent sector. Alternatively, students may choose to continue their higher education studies by progressing onto the 3rd year of the University of Chichester's BA Dance programme.

What you need to know

What will I study?

You will take classes with students studying on the BA Dance and BA Dance Performance degree courses at the University of Chichester and work towards passing a range of modules from these courses. Alongside this, over the two years, you will study on and complete all units of the ISTD DDE. Modules include: Year 1 - Dance Techniques 1, Choreography & Devising, Choreography & Performance, Re-examining Dances, Preparing for Safe Teaching Practice (DDE), Social, Emotional and Cognitive Development (DDE), ISTD Genre Specific Dance Practice 1 (DDE) Year 2 – Dance Techniques 2, Dance Practice and Production, Themes, Trends and Discourse in Performance or Research Methodologies, ISTD Genre Specific Dance Practice 2 (DDE), Assisting, Observing and Teaching (DDE)

How will I be taught?

Delivery will take place at the Chichester College and University of Chichester campuses. You will take technique classes across a range of genres (contemporary dance, physical theatre, somatic techniques, ISTD Imperial Ballet, Modern Theatre and Tap). Choreography workshops will help you explore your creative voice. All student choreography will be taken to production with public performances every semester. How will I be assessed?

Dance Techniques 1, Choreography & Devising, Choreography & Performance, Re-examining Dances, Dance Practice and Production, Themes, Trends and Discourse in Performance or Research Methodologies will be internally assessed through a combination of course work and practical assessment. For Units 1 and 5 of the ISTD DDE you will compile a portfolio of documentation and assignments which will be assessed by an ISTD moderator. You will be entered for the Unit 4 practical examination which will be examined by a senior ISTD examiner. Your teaching portfolio and final teaching practice (Unit 2) will be assessed initial by your unit tutor and then moderated by an appointed ISTD assessor.
