Course Details

Chemistry is about the materials around us. Within this two year course you will look at physical chemistry and how atoms combine to produce the different substances we use everyday. You will investigate how and why reactions happen, how to speed them up, increase their yield and look at their effects on the environment. Through practical sessions you will learn to develop your skills in analytical, mathmatical and investigative skills. A keen interest and aptitute in working with number is key for this course.

Entry Requirements

You will need 5 GCSE's at grade 9/A* to 4/C including English Language, a minimum 2 grade 6/B's in Chemistry and a second Science or Double science and a grade 6/B in Maths. You will also be required to complete a GCSE to A Level Transition Project prior to enrolment.

Career options

This course provides a good foundation for study at Higher Education or careers in Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Dentistry, Materials Science, Research, Teaching, Forensic Science, Toxicology, Nanotechnology and many more, including non-directly science related careers.

What you need to know

What will I study?

At Chichester College you will study the AQA syllabus. The course is divided into 3 sections; physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. You will study some aspects of each section in year 1 with further topics in year 2. The course follows on from GCSE starting with the foundation topics of atomic structure and bonding, moles and equations, the periodic table and chemicals from oil. Further topics are introduced during year 1 including energetics, kinetics, redox reactions, groups 2 and 7 and more organic chemistry. Many of these topics are developed further in year 2 with some new areas incuding acids and bases, transition metals and organic analysis and synthesis.

How will I be taught?

There will be 2 sessions a week, a 2 hour class and a 3 hour class with a half hour break. All classes will be in well equipped laboratories. Classes will include a mixture of presentations, demonstrations, group or individual practicals, quizzes, discussions and exam question practice. A Level Chemistry uses a Flipped Learning System in which students learn some basic facts prior to the lesson which are then developed by the lecturer through individual and group activities in class.

How will I be assessed?

There are 3 exams at the end of this 2 year linear course. Papers 1 & 2 will focus on different parts of the syllabus while paper 3 will focus on the whole course including practical techniques & data analysis. All year 1 students will progress through a Year 1 Gateway, which may include external exams, that will allow you to progress to Year 2.
