Family History and the Internet

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course is suitable for you if have some basic family history information and want to develop your confidence in using the Internet to source information to help you build, for example, an online family tree. The course provides you with the tools and know-how to confidently find ancestors and locate results in commonly used records. You will learn how to organise and source information from civil registration of births, marriages, deaths, census records, parish registers, as well as covering other useful traditional and online resources which can be used to trace your ancestors. You will develop your confidence in file management and conducting advanced online searches using, for example, Boolean search operators.

This course will explore the vast range of free and subscription-based online sources of information which can be used to research your family history. Some of these sites will require a subscription. A discussion of what is available through a variety of service providers will be held at the beginning of the course.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Adults (19+) with some basic knowledge of using computers and the Internet. It is also useful if you have previously prepared a brief outline of your family tree to date and to bring any birth, marriage, or death certificates in your possession to enable you to enter detailed information on the computer.
