This exciting Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Construction Management for England will provide an informed and engaging introduction to the construction sector.
This course can be studied as a stand-alone qualification, or as part of a Level 4 Apprenticeship in Construction Site Supervision.
You will gain an understanding of what is happening within the sector, learn about stakeholder engagement, develop project management techniques and understand constructions skills that are highly relevant in today’s construction sector market.
The course covers eight units during the two years (1 Day per week). These include:
- Construction Technology
- The Construction Environment
- Legal and statutory responsibility in construction
- Digital Applications for Construction
- Site Supervision and Operations
- Financial Management and Business Practices
- Surveying Measuring and Setting out
- Construction Design Project
The course is taught by engaged, and qualified lecturers who have industry expertise.
During this course you will learn using our state-of-the-art resources. During your studies you will learn how to use standard surveying and setting out equipment, robotic total stations used or surveying. You will also use REVIT, an industry standard software package used for technical design on buildings.
The course is informed by the needs of the industry and is tailored to students who wish to advance their career prospects in the field.
Higher education has a higher focus on student-led and independent self-study – this means that you will be expected to complete independent learning by way of individual research, group work, discussion and flip learning.
The structure of our programmes follows clear educational aims that are expected from the awarding bodies. These are all outlined in the programme specifications, which include further details such as the learning outcomes.
Where are they now?
J and H after completing their HNC both were sponsored by their employers to study Surveying Degrees at the University of Portsmouth. After interview with the university, both started their studies with direct entry to year 2 of the degree.
B who is still in his 2nd year of study with us; started with us as a maintenance operative. B now works as a surveyor and has already achieved an internal promotion. When B finishes year 2 with us, his employers are planning on sponsoring him through a degree.

FURTHER INFORMATION
You are someone who wants to progress into or within the construction sector by taking on a new role or moving into the industry.
This course attracts a diverse range of learners from a range of backgrounds, some maybe returning to education. Our typical entry requirements are:
- GCE A’;; Levels or Level 3 Diploma or an Extended Diploma (Overall Merit)
- Relevant work experience
- GCSE Mathematics and English Language at grade 4/C or above
- English as a second language at IELTS 6.0 or equivalent
All applicants will have a one-to-one interview to discuss their suitability and individual circumstances.
You will need to be able to commit to the study requirements: You will be able to commit to 1 day (TBA) per week of in-person teaching and at least 6 hours per week of self-study. Self-study demands may increase as you prepare for assignments.
Application process Following your application for the course you will be invited to interview with a member of the lecturing team. You will also be expected to produce a written answer to a set topical question – this will help determine your suitability for the course.

You may also look at further study leading to an undergraduate degree or Masters degree leading to Chartership with o professional organisations such as RICS, CIOB, RTPI, or ICE.

The course will also provide you with a clear line of sight to progression to further higher education study or employment. You may want to pursue a degree programme.
You will complete a total of eight assessments. These assessments will be in various formats, including presentations, reports and practical assessments.
You will also complete an individual project that is set by the Awarding Body (Pearson). An example of a previous project that has been set was the impact of modern methods of construction and sustainability.

Staff profiles
Ian Dixon
Ian has a wealth of experience from the construction sector, from interior design to project management. He also has a Masters in Education from the University of Portsmouth. Ian is the Course leader for the HTQ/HNC and has been working with our students since 2020. Ian has taught on distance learning to apprentices for a national employer, as well as teaching our local apprentices and part time students.
Kevin Brown
Kevin has worked for many years in the construction sector and has a specialism of contaminated land surveying. Kevin currently works across several qualifications in the department lecturing on different Town Planning, and Construction Management qualifications.
Lucy Conder
Lucy is a qualified quantity surveyor. Lucy has worked with over 100 of our apprentices to ensure that they stay on track and build high quality portfolios in readiness for their End Point Assessments.
Kim Hunt
Kim leads on the quality of Higher Education in the construction department. Kim has worked with Chichester College for many years, and was responsible for initiation, design and Delivery of our now successful Town Planning Apprenticeship program.
Tom Hughes
Tom is the Teacher and Learning Manager for the area. Starting his early career in the construction sector as an electrician, Tom was lured into teaching by his old lecturers. Since 2009 Tom has worked with Chichester College and now has responsibility for the success of around 300 students and apprentices a year.
