Building bricks on the road to silver glory

A Chichester College brickwork student is celebrating after earning well-deserved second place at a recent college competition.

Brandon Harwood-Telfer took the runner up spot at the regional heats of the Guild of Bricklayers competition, which was held at Highbury College on Wednesday 24 April.

In coming second, Brandon was presented with new tools and a cash prize.

Lecturer Neil Redman said: "Brandon has worked hard and did the very best he could, demonstrating skill and determination.

“He has put in a lot of time with the brickwork lecturers, including Glen Smith, Steve Smith and Dave Poppleston-Mead, to reach the standards he is achieveing.

"We thought he did really well, and it looked like he came very close to winning.

"He certainly did us all proud and we're sure the experience will stand him in good stead for the SkillBuild competition in June. It should give him confidence in his own abilities."

Although Brandon narrowly missed out on a place in the Guild of Bricklayers finals, he will have another opportunity to build on these foundations in June when he takes his place in the regional SkillBuild competition - the first stage in the route to the 2021 WorldSkills Finals in Shanghai.
