Students get on track at Brands Hatch

Chichester College motorsport students, past and present, made a flying start to the year.

Owen Brassfield and Luca Townsend were invited to support a race team at Brands Hatch last month – with Luca only a few days into his course at the college!

The pair were supporting lecturer Dan Turner, who was competing at the famous racetrack.

They joined the crew, helping to ensure Dan’s car was ready and fuelled between sessions.

Dan said: “This was a fantastic opportunity and both Owen and Luca did a fantastic job.

“Owen completed his studies with us over the summer while Luca has just started, but they were brilliant and worked really hard.

“Their tasks were to support me and ensure the car was ready for scrutineering, safe, set up and fuelled up between sessions. This 45-minute race also required a mandatory pit stop and driver change, so they were expected to communicate via the pit wall to drivers and assist with the driver change.

“Unfortunately, we were cutting it very fine when calculating how much fuel was required for the race and, in the later stages suffered from fuel surging issues which meant I was losing about 3-4 seconds on one particular corner of the course.

“We had to settle for 25th position overall but we were the first MINI Cooper to the finish!

“There was lots to be learnt from this and it was a great opportunity to get students involved in a real life experience.”
