Young stylists offered head start at Chichester College

Youngsters from the Chichester area have been gaining an insight into hairdressing, thanks to a new course at Chichester College.

The pupils, aged from 13 to 15, took part in a 10-week programme at the college, learning basic hair styling and make-up techniques.

The Young Hair and Beauty Club is aimed at young people with an interest in the industry – as well as those who just want to develop their own skills.

They were taught in the college’s Lee Stafford Hair Salon on Tuesday evenings by salon supervisor Julie Barker, and supported by some of the hair and beauty students currently on full-time courses at the college.

The programme culminated in a special catwalk display in front of their families.

Julie said: “The girls were brilliant and incredibly dedicated. They’ve learnt a lot and I’ve seen them really grow in confidence over the past 10 weeks.

“They didn’t all know each other before coming in, but they’ve worked together – much like they would if they were on one of our full-time courses.

“I think this has given them a real taste of the industry, and I know some of them are already asking for more sessions so hopefully we can look at how we can develop this introductory club.”
